The professional development of our lawyers and students is guided by our continuing legal education program, which includes sessions on corporate law, M&A, capital markets, banking and debt finance, and other topics pertinent to the development of your legal career. A parallel litigation program is offered, which includes trial skills and advocacy training, and sessions on drafting facta and pleadings, negotiating for settlement, motion practice and techniques for discovery. These programs are supplemented by educational seminars specifically tailored for our students.
We also offer substantive sessions on topics including mental health in the workplace, practice management techniques, professionalism and networking, all of which we believe to be critical to well-rounded lawyers.
Each summer student is paired with one junior associate and each articling student is paired with one mid-level associate and one partner. Performance Reviews: To help you identify your strengths and hone your skills, you will receive formal performance reviews throughout your time at Torys in addition to receiving ongoing feedback from those you are working with at the firm.
We know the fastest way to gain an understanding of the law is by doing. That’s why we designed our student program with flexibility and autonomy in mind, to give you the real-world experience you need to confidently chart your path forward.
Our non-rotational system allows you to explore all your areas of interest over the course of your summer or articulating term. You can work in as many or as few practice areas of your choosing and gain exposure to a broad cross-section of practice areas and practice styles.
Summer students are welcome to organize their own split-summer opportunities. This needs to be approved, but we always try to be as accommodating as possible.

We participate in on-campus interviews during the 2L summer student recruitment process that takes place during the fall. After we send you an acknowledgement that we have received your application, we will not be in touch with you again before on-campus interviews. You will be notified by your law school’s career development office if you have been selected for an on-campus interview.

We will be in touch before Call Day to let you know whether we will be contacting you on Call Day to schedule an in-firm interview. We invite all interviewing students to schedule their first interview on Monday*, and we invite all interviewing students to participate in a second interview on Tuesday. Our preference is that all interviewing students meet with us for a first interview on Monday so that we have as much time as possible to get to know each other. We view interview week as a comprehensive three-day process and anticipate that all students invited to participate in our process will meet with us throughout the course of the three days.
Torys views all in-firm interviews and firm events held throughout interview week as valuable opportunities to evaluate candidates. We do not compile our final offer list until after the commencement of the LSO’s mutual black-out period beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. We extend formal offers to those students we want to hire at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Torys does not extend a second round of offers once we receive responses. Should we arrive at a decision at some point during the three day process that we will not be extending an offer to a particular student, we will communicate this information to the student in a timely manner so that the student may use their time to re-focus their efforts on other available opportunities. We run our recruitment process with honesty and integrity and we believe that candid and timely feedback for students is an important element of that process.
We do not expect to receive thank you cards or notes from candidates throughout the course of interview week. If you would like to pass along brief thanks, a call or an email to one of the lawyers you met is more than sufficient.
*Note that the references herein to days of the week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) are applicable to the 2L summer student recruitment process held in early November. For other student recruits regulated by the LSO that fall on days other than Monday to Wednesday, please read Monday as the first day of interview week, Tuesday as the second day of interview week and Wednesday as the final day of interview week.
