Sheila Block receives the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Canadian Law Awards

We are delighted to share that partner Sheila Block has received the Lifetime Achievement in the Legal Profession—Private Practice award at the 2024 Canadian Law Awards.

This marks the first year the Canadian Law Awards has issued this award, making Sheila the inaugural recipient for her transformational impact on Canada’s legal profession. The award recognizes and celebrates legal leaders with at least 30 years of experience or more who “have provided visionary strategies and innovative solutions to some of the profession’s most complex challenges”.

Sheila is one of the most celebrated litigators in Canada. Her top-quality legal work, exceptional advocacy, and dedication to her clients have made her a sought-after advocate across all manner of disputes. Not only has Sheila advocated on complex corporate matters at Canada’s highest courts—including numerous appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada—she has also maintained a steadfast devotion to pro bono and public interest work, with cases ranging from securities law and corporate governance to freedom of the press and other social justice issues, and much more.

Her leadership and mentorship extend beyond the walls of Torys. With an irrefutable dedication to educating the next generation of legal professionals and giving back to her profession, Sheila has taught at both the University of Toronto Law School and Osgoode Hall Law School.

Sheila’s tremendous experience has been recognized in all manner of publications such as Chambers Canada, Chambers Global, Benchmark Litigation, Lexpert, The Legal 500, and Best Lawyers. In 2022 she was awarded one of the nation’s greatest honors when she was appointed to the Order of Canada.
